Jägermeister

Unique from the inside out

Curt Mast experimented for years before finding the perfect blend: not ‘too sweet’, not ‘too citrusy’. In 1934, his uncompromising quest finally paid off. In a feat of alchemy, Mast transformed 56 botanicals and 35% alcohol into the taste-intensive herbal liqueur known and loved by people around the world.

But what drove Curt Mast to develop his inimitable product? Besides his fascination for spirits, Curt Mast was a passionate hunter who envisioned a drink for toasting the hunt with friends. This close bond with the forest and hunting is written into the Jägermeister label and bottle.

Mast had no difficulty in finding a name for the new product: he called it Jägermeister (‘master huntsman’ in German), a professional title stemming from a centuries-old hunting tradition.

To find the perfect packaging for his new ‘hunting companion’, Curt Mast once again thought outside the box. One after one, he dropped various bottles onto his kitchen floor. One high-quality and particularly robust model withstood the trials: the striking green Jägermeister bottle.

So the herbal liqueur’s deep-rooted connection to the forest and nature is more than just skin deep. Ever since it was created over 80 years ago, Jägermeister is still produced according to the same secret recipe using only all-natural ingredients.

For the front label, Curt Mast chose a verse from a widely known hunting poem from Oskar von Riesenthal (1830 to 1898): ‘This is the hunters’ honour shield, which he protects and looks after his game, Huntsman hunts, As it should be, the Creator in the creatures honour.’ For the trademark, only one would do: Mast chose the legendary stag of Saint Hubertus with a glowing cross between his antlers.
